NeoCon 2026: Everything You Need to Know

NeoCon 2026: The Commercial Design World’s Biggest Stage

If the commercial interiors industry has a Super Bowl, it is NeoCon.

Every June, the massive Art Deco fortress known as The Mart (formerly the Merchandise Mart) in Chicago becomes the center of the design universe. For three intense days, over 50,000 architects, designers, facility managers, and C-suite executives gather to define the future of the built environment.

Whether you are a seasoned veteran with worn-out badges to prove it, or a first-timer intimidated by the sheer scale of 4 million square feet, this guide is for you. Here is everything you need to know to survive, thrive, and get the most out of NeoCon 2026.

A Brief History: Why NeoCon Matters

To appreciate NeoCon, you have to appreciate its longevity. Launched in 1969, the “National Exposition of Contract Interior Furnishings” (NeoCon) was the first event of its kind to bring the fragmented contract furniture industry under one roof.

For over 50 years, it has been the launchpad for the products that define our work lives—from the Action Office cubicle of the 1960s to the ergonomic revolution of the 90s, and the hybrid-work pods of today. While other trade shows move from city to city, NeoCon has remained anchored in Chicago, turning The Mart into a pilgrimage site for the profession.

Despite the rise of competing satellite events (like the nearby Fulton Market Design Days), NeoCon remains the “Mothership.” It is where the Best of NeoCon awards are handed out, where the biggest keynotes happen, and where the sheer volume of innovation is unmatched.

NeoCon 2026: Dates, Details, and What’s New

Mark your calendars now. The 2026 edition promises to be a pivotal year, featuring a major new addition to the show floor.

The Official Schedule

  • Dates: Monday, June 8 – Wednesday, June 10, 2026

  • Preview Day: Sunday, June 7, 2026 (12:00 PM – 4:00 PM)

  • Location: The Mart, 222 Merchandise Mart Plaza, Chicago, IL

New for 2026: “Illuminate at NeoCon”

The biggest buzz for 2026 is the launch of Illuminate at NeoCon, a new show-within-a-show located on the 7th floor. Historically, lighting was scattered throughout the building or relegated to a minor category. In 2026, The Mart is giving architectural and decorative lighting its own dedicated spotlight, featuring top-tier brands and technical workshops. If you are a lighting designer or an architect focused on illumination, this year is mandatory.

Registration Information

  • When to Register: Registration typically opens in early February 2026.

  • Cost: Registration for attendees is usually free if you register online before the show begins (typically up until June 7th). On-site registration often incurs a fee, so do not wait until you are in the lobby.

  • Where: Keep an eye on NeoCon.com for the portal launch.

Navigating The Mart: A Floor-by-Floor Strategy

The Mart is one of the largest commercial buildings in the world. Without a plan, it is a labyrinth. Here is how the building is structured for the show:

Floor 1: The Lobby & Registration

This is chaos central. It’s where you pick up your badge, grab a tote bag, and meet your colleagues.

  • Pro Tip: If you have your badge mailed to you (an option often available for early registrants), you can skip the massive lines here.

Floors 3, 10, & 11: The Permanent Showrooms

These floors house the titans of the industry—brands like Steelcase, Haworth, and MillerKnoll (though note that MillerKnoll has a massive presence in Fulton Market, they often retain a footprint or activation here).

  • The Vibe: High-end, polished, and crowded. These are permanent spaces that look like functioning offices.

  • Access: Some of the largest showrooms require appointments or have “VIP hours” in the morning. Check with your reps before you fly in.

Floor 7: The Exhibit Hall

This is the heart of the “trade show” experience. Unlike the permanent glass-walled showrooms on other floors, Floor 7 is a vast open hall filled with hundreds of booths.

  • What you’ll find: Emerging brands, international pavilions, acoustic solutions, technology startups, and the new Illuminate lighting section. This is often where you find the most surprising and agile innovation.

The “Elevator Game”

The elevators at The Mart are notorious. With 50,000 people trying to move vertically at once, wait times can exceed 30 minutes.

  • The Hack: Do not take the main bank of elevators in the center lobby. Walk to the Orleans Street elevators (on the west side of the building) or the freight elevators if you can find them.

  • The Stairs: If you are going down, take the stairs. It is always faster. A common pro strategy is to take an elevator to the top floor (11 or 14) first thing in the morning and then work your way down via the stairwells.

The Ultimate Survival Guide: Tips for Success

NeoCon is a marathon, not a sprint. Here is how to survive three days on concrete floors.

1. Shoe Strategy

This is non-negotiable: Wear comfortable shoes. You will walk 15,000+ steps a day. The days of suffering in stilettos or stiff dress shoes are largely over; the industry has embraced “smart casual” with high-end sneakers. If you must wear heels for a presentation, carry them in your tote and swap them out.

2. Hydration and Climate Control

  • Water: Bring a refillable water bottle. There are filling stations, but lines for buying $8 water bottles at the food court are demoralizing.

  • Temperature: The Mart has two climates: sweating in the crowded hallways and freezing in the air-conditioned showrooms. Dress in layers. A light blazer or cardigan is essential.

3. The App is Your Friend

Download the NeoCon App before you arrive. It has a map that actually works (mostly), a schedule of CEU seminars, and a list of exhibitors. Use it to “star” the showrooms you must see so you don’t get distracted by bright shiny objects.

4. Food: Escape the Mart

The 2nd-floor food court (The Food Hall) is convenient but insanely crowded at noon.

  • Better option: Walk just outside the building. Marshall’s Landing (at the top of the Grand Stair) is great for coffee but busy. For lunch, cross the street to River North. Places like Beatrix or Hampton Social are a short walk and offer a mental break from the show floor.

5. The Fulton Market Connection

You cannot talk about NeoCon without mentioning Fulton Market Design Days. The two events run concurrently.

  • The Shift: In 2026, major brand KI is moving out of The Mart and opening a new showroom in Fulton Market. This continues a trend of brands moving west.

  • The Commute: Use the free shuttles that run between The Mart (South Drive) and Fulton Market. They run constantly and are a great place to rest your feet for 15 minutes.

Where to Stay: The Hotel Game

Hotels in Chicago during NeoCon are expensive and book up fast. You generally have two strategies:

1. Convenience (The Merchandise Mart Zone)

If you want to roll out of bed and walk to the show:

  • Holiday Inn Chicago Dwtn – The Mart: It’s the closest you can stay to The Mart without sleeping in a showroom. It’s not luxury, but it is unbeatable for location.

  • The Langham, Chicago: Located just across the street. If you have the budget, this is the finest luxury experience in the city.

  • voco Chicago Downtown: A solid, stylish option just north of the river.

2. The Vibes (River North & West Loop)

  • The Emily Hotel (West Loop): If you plan to spend half your time at Fulton Market Design Days, stay here. It’s the hub of the West Loop action.

  • The Hoxton (West Loop): Trendy, buzzing with designers, and great rooftop bars.

  • LondonHouse Chicago (River North): stunning river views and a short walk to The Mart.

Booking Tip: Book your hotel by January or February 2026. By April, prices skyrocket, and by May, you will be staying near the airport.

Nightlife and Networking

NeoCon doesn’t end at 5:00 PM. The real business happens at the parties.

  • Showroom Parties: Monday and Tuesday nights are filled with showroom cocktail hours. These are usually invite-only or require an RSVP. Ask your reps for invites weeks in advance.

  • IIDA Gala: The black-tie event of the season. If you want to rub shoulders with the industry elite, get a ticket to the Cool Gala.

  • NeoCon Plaza: The outdoor terrace along the riverfront at The Mart. It’s the best place for a casual drink in the fresh air during the day or immediately after the show closes.

How to maximize your 2026 Trip

NeoCon 2026 is shaping up to be a year of transition and innovation, with the new Illuminate sector and the continued synergy with Fulton Market. The key to a successful show is preparation. Register early, book your hotel now, and plan your floor path before you ever step foot in Chicago.

But remember: while the products are the draw, the people are the point. NeoCon is the one time a year the entire industry is face-to-face. Take the time to talk to strangers in the elevator, grab coffee with an old colleague, and soak in the energy of the design community.
